Generally here at Frugal Fridays our Thursday Thirteens are focused on how to save money at home. Let’s face it though, we all like to go out to eat on occasion, whether it’s for a birthday or anniversary dinner or just for a break from the ordinary. As usual, we here at Frugal Fridays are here to help!
While eating at home will almost always be far more frugal than dining out, there are ways you can save money when doing so. Some are very much common sense choices. Others may surprise you, I know they surprised me! So please be sure to keep on reading.
Thirteen Ways to Save Money When Eating Out
- Order appetizers or lunch portions instead of ordering from the dinner menu: Most casual dining establishments will give you more than enough to satisfy you on the appetizer menu. If not, just have that dessert at home!
- Plan on Leftovers: Order a nice large meal and then just eat half. Save the rest for lunch tomorrow or as a quick dinner after work the next day. This effectively cuts your restaurant bill in half.
- Split your Entree: Again, many restaurants serve far more food on one plate than you really need for one meal. If both you and your partner are in the mood for lighter fare, just ask for another plate. (It is still polite to tip as though you had ordered for two, though.)
- Skip the Beverages: Want to see a significant drop in the bill the next time you eat out? Just order water and a slice of lemon. Restaurant markups on drinks help keep them in business. I mean really, would you drink tea at home if it cost you $3.00 per glass?
- One Meal for two kids: If you have young children, why pay the price of two children’s meals if neither child will finish a whole meal? Order one of the larger children’s meals and split it, then have a nice bowl of ice cream at home!
- Look for kids eat free nights: Around here that would be Thursday at most of the local chains, Sunday at a few local places. Everyone gets to enjoy eating out, but the meals for kids under 13 is free! (When I’ve got my boys with me, this can save me upwards of $60.00!)
- Get the book: Most towns and communities offer a “dining out book” of some type. These books can have some really great coupons and deals in them. Just read the fine print! Some deals look too good to be true, and if that’s the case, they probably are.
- Go for the starters: If the restaurant you’re eating at offers free bread sticks, soups, salads or chips and salsa (or queso), fill up on the freebies and order a smaller, less expensive meal. You’ll be just as full, but you’ll have more money.
- Atmosphere Phatmoshpere: Why pay an extra $10.00 per plate to order at a trendy bistro? If you’re just heading for a casual night out, hit a family style or casual dining restaurant instead. Save the really posh eateries for really special occasions. (Note from Jerry: The best Mexican food I’ve ever eaten came out of a literal “hole in the wall” in Chicago, Il. No seating, no tables, take-out only. The “better” mexican place down the road was considerably more expensive, but the food stunk!)
- Skip Dessert: Unless dessert is the reason you went out, why not skip it and make a sunday at home with that special someone? It’s just as tasty, and you get to have a lot of fun with the whipped cream! (Not that way! Get your mind out of the gutter!)
- Look for an early bird menu: They still exist at some restaurants. Slightly smaller portions of most of the meals served on the dinner menu, and you’ll still have plenty of time to catch a movie.
- Check out Restaurants.com: Many of the larger chains offer coupons through this service. Why not use them if you can find them?
- And finally Eat at home: whether it’s take and bake pizza or a restaurant inspired meal, it’s still the least expensive way to go. Make it special. Eat in the living room on a blanket in front of a fire or propped up against the sofa watching movies. There’s no reason eating at home can’t be fun! If you’ve got kids, find a sitter that can take them at a different location. Having the house to yourself is far better tah any restaurant!
Tips gathered from the following sources:

The best way is to have an entree, r an appetizer, but not both. Most restaurants serve far too much food and the amount that is wasted is almost immoral.
Great list. I love to eat out and look for the most frugal ways to do it. This helps.
Mmm. Whipped cream. The Tour Manager taught our son the art of spraying the canned stuff right into your mouth. *sigh*
Btw, I’ll take the hole in the wall joint over the trendy place ANY day.
We often do one, five, and sometimes eight. Great tips!
I love hole in the wall joints. They have a lot more atmosphere than the pricey places!
We, too, look for ways to save on random occasions; then, when something really special comes along, we can splurge.
It seems like you are a big fan of Ice cream!
TO had the drink tip, even if you don’t like water, just buy some pop, because most of the alcholic drink are at least 4,50$.
Great ideas! I love going out - and this really makes it possible. We usually don’t go to chains but have found that small places run specials for regulars - hee hee. That’s the best!
After watching 2 teenage girls waste food while eating out on vacation, I got to the point where I asked if they could order from the children’s menu. Sometimes that will work.
All good ideas on your list! Thank you for sharing.
Wow. Drinks can sure add up. We don’t usually get dessert either.
Great list, my 33rd TT is up at 13 Muslim Greeting Cards - I noted the paucity of Islamic Greeting Cards at my local stationery store and so as a public service to Muslims in America, I offer the following 13 Shariah-Compliant Greeting Cards…
Great tips…..A groups of ladies at work (including myself) try to go out once a month. We usually split the desert…..it helps a little! Happy TT!
Great ideas…I do the appetizer, entree splitting, and coupon book things. Also, on my review site, we’re affiliated with Restaurant.com — my fave Indian place is on there. I wait until they run coupon codes and then I get a $25 GC to the restaurant for $4-6.
Please come stop by my 13 Thursday…it will lead to games and Cprizes!
Nothing annoys me more than watching people split entrees. To me that is so cheap. Or you get someone who won’t order, then picks off everyone’s plate. Forget it. I don’t like dives, or the hole in the wall. I also don’t like pretense
Left-overs also make me crazy.
I live alone. It is a heck of a lot cheaper for me to go out than eat at home. What makes me mad are places that do not have a vegetarian option.

very good list we forget those things
Great list. I took notes:) Happy TT.
Great tips here! I didn’t read all the comments, but did anyone mention the deals you can get at restaurants.com?
Anyway, this is a good 13!
1, 2, 10 and 11 sound like winners for my family!
I don’t care if any of those suggestions make us look cheap…we are indeed tight with the cash and we don’t waste food! Our family is also never broke as a result. Thanks for all the ideas, and happy TT!
Great Tips! Thanks kim
Good suggestions - I definitely think the restaurant culture is a little too prevalent and wasteful, and I’m sure it helps with America’s obesity problem. Asking for a box when you get your meal is a great way to ensure you only eat half of it at a time, saving both your calories and your money.
Thanks for all the good tips!
going to go check Restaurants.com ASAP!
Cause my 3 favorite words to hear are “Lets Eat Out”
Great list! Thanks for the tips!
Great tips, thanks. Happy TT
This is a great list! The free starters are key. Sometimes if a restaurant doesn’t have them, I won’t go there. Feeding five of us when we go out is way too expensive if they don’t bring unlimited free bread or chips and salsa!
My list is at http://www.audrakrell.com
Since my hair turned grey I’ve had waitresses (in certain places) inform me that they have a senior citizen special. Of all the nerve, why couldn’t they have told me this years ago?
