Frugal Fridays

Da RuleZ

I know that not everyone is fond of rules, but this couldn’t be an organized event without them, now could it? The Rules for the Frugal Fridays Event are pretty straightforward and I’m pretty sure that most people won’t have a problem following them.  Just remember, these RuleZ are set in Jello, and may only be stretched.  If you break them, the whole thing just looks silly!

The Official Frugal Friday Food Event Rulebook:

  • Create a tasty and (hopefully) nutritious meal that will feed at least four people for $10.00 or under, then blog about it.  You may use your local currency equivalent in this challenge as well, so long as the difference isn’t that different. (C’mon…  £10.00 is going to go a LOT farther than $10.00 US! Try to keep it reasonably close where possible.)
  • We’re running under the assumption that most common spices, oils, vinegars, extracts and other general cooking provisions and pantry staples will be available at no cost.  These staples will vary from cook to cook and from country to country, so if you always have it on hand, feel free to use it.

(The only exception to this would be those ingredients or spices that would either become the main ingredient of the dish, or those that are so cost prohibitive that their use alone would bring the cost of the dish over $10.00.  So please, no caviar, saffron, truffles, etc. unless you can prove to us that you can walk out and pick them yourself.)

  • Mention the Frugal Fridays Food Event somewhere in your blog post and include a link to www.frugalfridays.net. With any luck this will raise awareness of the event and get more foodies to join in on the fun.  If you’d like to toss in a link to Cooking by the seat of my Pants, I’d appreciate it, but it’s not necessary.  The primary focus of the event is the event itself!
  • Show up sometime between Thursday at 4:00 PM CST (1600 CST - GMT -0600) and Saturday Morning and drop a comment with a link to your Frugal Fridays Entry on the current Frugal Fridays post to let us know you’re in. (This will become more evident as the event progresses.)
  • This is the most important and unwavering rule of all. Have Fun! It can be a challenge to create a great meal for a little money, but it’s the perfect time to let your creative side loose and just go for it in the kitchen.  That’s what makes life worth living, isn’t it?

These rules are subject to change, though if they do I’ll give you notice.  If you break the $10.00 limit by a bit, just post anyway and tell us where and why you went over the limit.  Moreso than the strict price cap, this event is a challenge to see just what kind of wonderful stuff you can whip out for very little and to prove once and for all that great food need not be expensive food, or difficult, either.
